Always Be Prepared for an Unexpected Disaster with Pennsylvania Home Insurance

Posted: December 16, 2011

Pennsylvania is a state that is hit by very few hurricanes but this doesn’t mean we are disaster proof. Last August hurricane Irene and an earthquake measuring 5.8 struck Pennsylvania within one week. While Pennsylvania home insurance is a smart way to financially protect your home against unexpected events no one can predict when these emergencies may occur.

What if a disaster did happen in Pennsylvania? Would your family know what to do? Prepare now by assuming you may have to look after yourself and your family during an emergency.

  1. Prepare an emergency kit with enough supplies for all your family. Your kit should include canned foods, bottled water, a battery operated radio, torch and extra batteries. Don’t forget to include a first aid kit and extra medication for anyone with specific health needs.
  2. Talk with your family and close neighbors and put together a plan of action in the event of an emergency. Make sure all your family members are aware of the plan and regularly practice it.
  3. Research disasters that are most likely to happen in your area and learn how to prepare for them.

Remember you may be at work when a disaster occurs so it’s a good idea to organize an emergency plan with your co workers and ensure an emergency kit is appropriately stocked and readily available. Some natural disasters like flood and earthquake may not be covered by your standard Pennsylvania home insurance. For information on additional coverage speak to your insurance agent.
