Going Green Save on Your Homeowner’s Insurance and Be Environmentally Friendly

There are options to make everything “green” these days, but have you given any thought to making your home green? Sure, almost anyone can drive a hybrid car, and that definitely helps the environment quite a bit. However, there is more that you can do than just driving an environmentally friendly car. Making your home green can not only help save the environment, it can also save you money on your homeowner’s insurance. Green homes usually present less risk for insurance agencies, which means they can provide your home with more affordable insurance rates.

Here are a few steps you can take to lessen your homeowner’s insurance costs by going green:

  1. Control the temperature as much as possible; you can reduce your energy costs by doing so. Double paned windows and door/wall insulation can greatly reduce your energy costs.
  2. Change your light bulbs! There are more and more brands of energy efficient light bulbs coming out every day. You might be surprised at what a difference simply switching light bulb brands can make in the costs of your energy bills. The most popular energy efficient light bulb is the CFL, or compact fluorescent light. These light bulbs last up to 15 times longer than the average light bulb. This is good for the environment and your wallet!
  3. Turn off your electronics! Just because your TV is off, doesn’t mean that there’s no power running to it. A great way to avoid leaving your electronic running, for example, is to plug all of your home entertainment electronics into one power strip. By doing this, you can simply switch off the power strip and power will no longer be constantly running to your electronics. This not only saves electricity costs, it is health for the environment as it saves energy.
  4. Get a high efficiency toilet or HET. An HET can not only help save you money on your water bill, but it will also conserve water. HETs use less water and are extremely friendly to the environment.
